We Wrote This with You in Mind is a play grieving the past: two friends reminisce on the monstrous chasm of place and memory.

“WE’RE HAVING NIGHTMARES AGAIN”

This is a play for our ancestors. It’s a play for our families. It’s about seeking & waiting for a seemingly nameless grief to arise. It’s about longing after an abandonment. It’s about returning. It’s about the petty sadness that crowns existential dread. It’s about confronting that which would be easier forgotten. We wrote this with you in mind.

What People are Saying

"It was so fiercely beautiful"

"Hauntingly imaginative!"

"This show could be seen again and again and it would offer something new each time"

"Really moving & balanced & disturbing & beautiful"

"Stunning, painful, funny, lyrical"

Taken as a trippy whole, We Wrote This and In a Different Reality show Foster fine-tuning a signature brand within the ecosystem of Shaking the Tree: surrealist sagas that ooze existential rage and despair, but find solace in imperfect platonic relationships, like the mysterious one at the heart of We Wrote This.
Bennett Campbell Ferguson, Willamette Week

"The play, directed by Shaking the Tree’s associate artistic director, Rebby Yuer Foster, is like a dream that exists in that space in between sleeping and waking, where everything simultaneously makes total sense and also no sense at all."
Krista Garver, Broadway World

About the Playwright:
Ken Yoshikawa (he/him) likes to write plays and poems and do silly things onstage. He’s a playwright in residence with The Historic Alberta House, a member of Linestorm Playwrights, and had an absolute blast as a student of PETE’s Institute of Contemporary Performance. This is his first professional commissioned play ever! Wowie, and how lovely a time it was devising this world with this stellar group of artists! Recently he played Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at PCS, and has shown up around town at OAT, NWCT, OCT, and others! He performed his solo show The Art of Fly Swatting in town and at the Pan Asian Repertory off-broadway in NYC. In his free time he enjoys video games, hanging with friends, trees, and working as an astrologer.
