Shaking the Tree is thrilled to present the west coast premiere of Escaped Alone by Caryl Churchill

"I’m walking down the street and there’s a door in the fence open and inside there are three women I’ve seen before."
Three old friends and a neighbour.
A summer of afternoons in the backyard.
Tea and catastrophe.

“Escaped Alone" is a fairy tale of sorts, as were Ms. Churchill’s earlier “The Skriker”and “Far Away.” This magnificent writer’s latest variation on that form reaffirms such tales’ power to warm us even as they warn of the unspeakable dangers in the wide, dark world beyond.

Escaped Alone premiered at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 2016, in a production directed by James Macdonald.

What People are Saying

Picture
"It's a testament to Churchill, Van Der Merwe and the cast that the play's ambiguities intrigue rather than frustrate. Escaped Alone is so engrossing it's easy to sit back and surrender to its surreal flow—to bask in peculiarities"
- Bennett Campbell Ferguson, Willamette Week

"A Churchill play is often like an alley-oop. She tosses up a perfectly placed floater and asks others to jump up and bring it down. She asks those producing, directing, and acting in her plays to bring it to life by trusting their own interpretations.
Well, Churchill tossed up the floater and Shaking the Tree slammed it down."
- Christopher Gonzalez, Oregon ArtsWatch

"Poets, language lovers, and speculative fiction fans will be drawn in by the meaningful and frequently hilarious digressions. Any line could be a story in itself."
- Suzette Smith, Portland Mercury

"For maximum enjoyment of “Escaped Alone," stop reading right now, buy your tickets, and go into the theater as uninformed as possible."
-Ben Waterhouse, The Oregonian

"seeing those four women on the stage (I could have been one of them), and hearing them say what Churchill knew they ought to say, was a mighty fine experience" ~patron

"I loved seeing all 4 lovely “mature” actresses giving such splendid performances in an amazingly strange little play. So well acted, so dense, and the scenic and sound design was a perfect match to the words. It will live on in my memory . . ." ~Patron
