Winter Classes 2012: Fairy Tales from Denmark and Norway

Picture
As winter sets in, we will travel north and explore some fascinating fairy tales from Denmark and Norway. As I looked through my favorite books on the subject I found this wonderful quote from Lise Lunge-Larsen- "As a society we have come to think of folktales as amusing entertainment, quaint relics of the past. We certainly do not view them as vehicles for understanding. Yet folktales explore issues as complex as the nature of good and evil, and the triumph of kindness and patience over bullying and anger. Folktales reveal universal truths." She also shares with us 15 basic lessons repeated in folk and fairy tales: "1. Remember who you are, 2. Be true to your own nature, 3. Follow your dreams, 4. Every action has a consequence, so be attentive, be kind, and always do what is right, 5. Life is a journey; nobody else can do that journey for you, 6. Your journey will unfold according to a pattern. The pattern is a guide, 7. Use you gifts, 8. Help will be offered when you most need it and least expect it, 9. Despite the odds, good will triumph over evil, love over hatred, 10. Don't ever give up, 11. Be careful what you wish for, 12. Things are not always as they appear, 13. Everything you need can be found inside yourself; it is always there, 14. Miracles happen, 15. There is magic in the world."

The Best Wish: Mondays and Thursdays (Space available)
Dive into comedy with this adventurous Norwegian tale about three brothers who each get one wish! It turns out that the younger brother's wish, which seems the most frivolous at the start of the adventure, turns out to be the most clever wish of all. We will use this story as a springboard for creating our own comedic romp. Each week, we'll look at a different style of comedy throughout the history of theatre & film, starting with the ancient comedy of Aristophanes & the Greeks, we'll also look at the Sanskrit rasa of comedy, Shakespearean and Elizabethan comedy, Comedia dell' arte, and then onto great comedians of the modern age such as Charlie Chaplin, the Three Stooges, Oleg Popov, Marcel Marceau, and Monty Python. We'll also discuss the work of our favorite contemporary comedians as inspiration for our play. A final performance of the play will be presented to family and friends.

All Ages: Private Lessons

I am now offering private lessons (drama coaching) on Saturdays and some evenings. Each lesson runs half an hour and will be scheduled once weekly. In class we will select and work on two contrasting monologues (solo speeches from plays or books). Monologues offer an avenue for character study, confidence building and help students polish their stage craft. A good monologue will arm the student with material for auditions, should they wish to try out for plays at different theater companies.
Students can come on an ongoing basis or decide to do a series of lessons, in which case, 5-6 lessons are suggested for working on and memorizing two monologues.

Please Call Samantha to schedule a time at (971) 207-9081
Cost: $20 per lesson
