Winter Camps

The White Bear King Valemon (Class Full)
Very similar to East of the Sun and West of the Moon & the Lady and the Lion, the youngest princess dreams about a golden wreath and when she sees it on a white bear in the forest, decides that she must have it. She offers the bear riches beyond words but the bear tell her that the wreath cannot be bought. She goes back to the king and tells him that she must go with the bear but he refuses and sends his army out to defeat him. The bear bats the arrows away easily but the king offers his older daughters in return. One by one they are sent back by the bear because they are shallow and self centered. Finally the youngest princess goes with him and lives for a while happily in his palace until she makes a terrible mistake. This mistake reveals him as a prince but causes him to flee and become a prisoner with the awful and revolting trolls. The young princess goes from door to door looking for her beloved bear and eventually travels the world. She is given a handful of magical gifts by various old hags whom she meets on her way to the land of the trolls and finally uses them to outwit the trolls and prevent a marriage to the hideous princess Longnose.

The Winters Tale by William Shakespeare
Retold by Bruce Coville (Space Available)
A tempest is raging in the heart of King Leontes- a jealous rage that keeps growing despite his loving wife's protests. When Leontes becomes so crazed with this jealousy that he orders his wife, Hermione, imprisoned and his own baby daughter, Perdita, banished, he sets in motion a chain of events that will become even more dire. But this is not one of Shakespeare's tragedies. It's a journey from dark to light, with a healthy dose of fancy and surprise. That baby daughter has much adventure- not to mention love- in her future. And Leontes? Perhaps fate is occasionally kind to one who is full of regret. The Winter's Tale is a story of redeption and of the strength of friendship and true love.
We will work from the retelling of the play so that students can get a good idea of plot and character and then we'll add in some Shakespearean lines for full effect.
