SUMMER CAMPS 2012

Sprouting The Classics

Shaking The Tree is "Sprouting the Classics for the seventh year in a row by inviting children and teens to enter into the wonderful world of literature through drama. Each camp uses the dramatic arts to bring a different beloved story (or collection of stories) to life. Scroll down the page to find your child's age group and description of the book we will be working on. Classes are small and run half day. All classes are taught by Samantha Van Der Merwe, Artistic and Executive director at Shaking The Tree. Here's to another classic summer!
Shaking The Tree's policies are located at the bottom of the page as a down-loadable pdf.

Ages 5-7

Each week focuses on a beloved children's book. We'll start off each day with theater games to warm up, learn dramatic skills and get acquainted with new friends. Our first three days will be spent working through the story and acting out our favorite scenes using costumes and props. On the fourth day (Thursday), we'll choose our three (or four) favorite scenes and make prop and set pieces needed for those scenes. On Friday, we'll set up the theater, rehearse our play and then later perform it for family and friends. The Friday performance will be held at noon.

Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi
As soon as he arrived home, Geppetto took his tools and began to make his puppet. "What shall I call him?" he asked himself. "I think I shall call him Pinocchio. That name will bring him good luck."

Geppetto carves a wonderful puppet and gets more than he bargained for when the wood comes to life! His finished puppet can talk and walk and cause mischief. And when he tells a lie, Pinocchio's nose grows and grows. But Pinocchio is brave and adventurous, and truly, deep down, he just wants to become a real boy.

The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic by Jennifer Trafton (Class Full)
"Please listen to me. You must make peace with the Leafeaters, apologize for whatever wrongs you may have done them, and offer amends. Only then do we have any hope of warning them about the giant...Right, Captain Gidding?" The only response was a soft snore.

Ten year old Persimmony Smudge lives a boring life on the island in the middle of Everything, desperately longing for high adventure. But when she overhears a life-altering secret, she suddenly finds herself in the middle of an amazing and perilous journey. Mount Majestic, the rising and falling mountain in the center of the island, isn't actually what everyone thinks it is. And now it's up to Persimmony and her new friend Worvil the Worrier, to convince the island's quarreling inhabitants, including the stubborn young king, that they must come together to face the truth. The question is, Will she be able to make everyone believe this unbelievable tale?

The Railway Children by E. Nesbit (Class Full)
She struck a match and relighted the candle and everyone looked at each other by its winky, blinky light. "Well," she said, "you've often wanted something to happen and now it has. This is quite and adventure isn't it?"

Roberta, Peter and Phyllis don't realize how happy their life in London is until their beloved father goes away unexpectedly. They move to a simple country cottage with Mother, and befriend the local railway porter, who goes by the name of Perks. But even though they have many exciting adventures, the mystery remains: where is Father, and will he ever return?

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
They found it behind a coffin on the bottom shelf - a simple crawl space. "Down there," said Bod. "We go down there." Scarlett found herself suddenly enjoying adventure rather less. She said, "We can't see down there. It's dark."
"I don't need light," said Bod. "Not while I'm in the graveyard."

Nobody Owens, known as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a graveyard, being raised by ghosts, with a guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living not the dead. There are adventures in the graveyard for a boy - an ancient Indigo Man, a gateway to the abandoned city of ghouls, the strange and terrible Sleer. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, he will be in danger from the man Jack - who has already killed Bod's family.

Holes by Louis Sachar
He opened his eyes. He suddenly realized where he'd seen the gold tube before. He'd seen it in his mother's bathroom, and he'd seen it again in the Warden's cabin, It was half a lipstick container. K B?
K B? He felt a jolt of astonishment. His mouth silently formed the name Kate Barlow, as he wondered if it really could have belonged to the kissin' out-law.

Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-great-grandfather and his since followed generation of Yelnats. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys' detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the boys build character by spending all day, everyday, digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. But there are an awful lot of holes. It doesn't take long for Stanley to realize there's more than character improvement going on at Camp Green lake. The boys are digging holes because warden is looking for something. But what could be buried under a dried-up lake? Stanley tried to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humerous tale of crime and punishment - and redemption.

Luka and the Fire of Life by Salman Rushdie (Class Full)
He woke up early, well before dawn, but he wasn't the first to open his eyes. The memory birds and animals were still asleep...Soraya was staring toward the far horizon, and if Luka didn't know she was fearless he would have said she was afraid. He went to stand beside her... "What's the matter?" he asked, and she shook her head violently and did not at first reply. Then in a quiet voice she said, "I should never have brought you here. This is no place for you."

"You've reached the age at which people in this family cross the border into the magical world. It's your turn for an adventure - yes, it's finally here!" So says Haroun to his younger brother, twelve-year-old Luka. The adventure begins one beautiful  starry night in the land of Alifbay, when Luka's father, Rashid, falls suddenly into a sleep so deep that nothing and no one can rouse him. To save him from slipping away entirely, Luka embarks on a journey through the world of magic with his loyal companions, Bear, the dog, and Dog, the bear. Together they encounter a slew of fantastical creatures, strange allies, and challenging obstacles along the way - all in the hope of stealing the Fire of Life, a seemingly impossible and exceedingly treacherous task.
