Act out a Story

In this favorite class for five to seven year olds, we start with warm ups & theatre games that encourage exploration in the areas of breathing, voice, creative movement, improvisation and characterization. After this, we read a story and then discuss elements of the story, such as theme and characters. Now comes the part everyone's been waiting for; we act it out with costumes and props! Our two themes this season are Island Hopping: Tales of the Islands and The Great Big Book of Magicians’ adventures. At the end of the season, students will choose their favorite story to perform for parents and friends.

Monologues & Characterization

We start our weekly class with warm ups & theatre games that encourage exploration in the areas of creative movement, improvisation & characterization. Extra attention is given to breathing and voice so that the young actor can confidently express themselves on stage or in front of a group. Students will choose a favorite character from a book and then learn a monologue or excerpt from that book. Through games and exercises, we will also explore what makes our characters tick and why we like them so much. Students will perform their monologues for family and friends at the end of the season.

Scene Study for Young Actors

We start our weekly class with warm ups & theatre games that encourage exploration in the areas of creative movement, improvisation & characterization. Extra attention is given to breathing and voice so that the young actor can confidently express themselves on stage or in front of a group. We will start the season off by reading a handful of plays together and then choosing some of our favorite scenes to work on. There may be two or more actors in each scene
. Scene study is a wonderful way for students to focus on give and take, talking and listening, eye contact, and truthfulness in delivery and reaction. Students will perform their scenes at the end of the season.

Improvisation for Young Actors

We start our weekly class with warm ups. Extra attention is given to breathing and voice so that the young actor can confidently express themselves on stage or in front of a group. We will explore many improvisation games and through these games, learn the basic rules of acting “on your feet” such as quick thinking, sincerity, spontaneity, risk taking, listening, give-and-take and much, much more. With the use of short story prompts, students will come up with a repertoire for performance and will get to show off their new skills at the end of the season for family and friends.
