Spring Classes 2012: Stories of Conflict and Peace

Picture
In preparation for Shaking The Tree's production of Far Away by Caryl Churchill, in September 2012, the theme for our spring classes will be Conflict and Peace. The collection of stories I have found, explore the many different types of conflict that people can experience and the creative ways in which they find resolution. Sometimes it's by standing true to what you believe in, sometimes it's by questioning the illusions you've allowed yourself to be bound by, sometimes it's by all working together to find the way forward. There are as many resolutions as there are conflicts. I look forward to all the discussion that these stories will bring forth. Please scroll down to your child's age and then find the offerings listed below. I am also adding a Saturday morning Scene Study & Monologue class for students who want to work with text and all the techniques needed for polished delivery. Look under the 9 & up age-groups for more information on that class. All classes will result in a final performance for family and friends. The performances will be held on Sunday June 10th. Times will be announced at a later date.

The Flame of Peace: Mondays
A long time ago in an ancient Aztec city, a boy named Two Flint watched his father leave to try and persuade an invading army to retreat. But when his father did not return and the warriors began to prepare for battle, Two Flint decided to search for Lord Morning Star, the only one who could bring peace to his people. The journey was dangerous. Two Flint had to face nine evil demons, including the powerful Lord Volcano, the treacherous Lord Earthquake, and the smooth-talking Lord Smoking Mirror, the great trickster. Even Lord and Lady Death tried to stop him. But Two Flint was brave and clever, and using his wits alone he reached the Hill of the Star, where Lord Morning Star rewarded him. Returning triumphantly to his people with the New Fire of Peace, Two Flint placed the sacred fire in the temple, where it burned bright and true for a long time. We will act out our story for friends and family, at a final performance on Sunday June 10th 2012. Please note: There will be no class on Monday April 30th.

Lugalbanda: Tuesdays (Class Full)
Older than the Torah, the Bible, the Koran, older than Homer or the Greek and Roman myths, older even than the Epic of Gilgamesh, comes the story of a boy named Lugalbanda who got caught up in a war. The clay tablets containing the original pieces of the story, recorded in cuneiform by the Sumerians, were found by nineteenth century explorers but not translated until the 1970s. Filled with adventure, myth and magic, Lugalbanda is an extraordinary coming-of-age story about a boy who brings wisdom and peace to his people in a time of unchecked ambition and endless battle. We will act out our story for friends and family, at a final performance on Sunday June 10th 2012. Please note: There will be no class on Tuesday May 1st.

Nine Dragons: Tuesdays
Long ago in a far off land, two tribes shared a common legend - They believed that the mountains between them were the home of nine terrible and terrifying dragons. For generations, fear of the dragons kept the two tribes apart, until a catastrophic drought forced them to into the mountains in search of food. Nine Dragons tells the story of how the two tribes prepared to go to war over their dwindling resources, and how the oldest and wisest of the nine dragons convinced the others that they had to stop the battle before it started. Nine Dragons is an inspirational tale about overcoming mistrust and misunderstanding to achieve peace. We will act out our story for friends and family, at a final performance on Sunday June 10th 2012. Please note: There will be no class on Tuesday May 1st.

Tam Lin: Wednesdays
"Do not go down to Caterhaugh..."
Tam Lin is probably the best known of the traditional fairy ballads. When the worlds of humankind and the Faery Folk sit side by side- with moonlight and mist the only door between- young Jennet MacKenzie defies her parents warning and embarks on a quest to win back the forbidden Caterhaugh, her ancestral home. One evening at the dilapidated mansion Jennet comes upon a blood-red rose amid the twining thorns. When she plucks it, it summons forth Tam Lin, a handsome captive of the Faery Queen. With courage and spirit, Jennet challenges the power of the Queen to save the life of Tam Lin and win back the home that is rightfully hers. We will act out our story for friends and family, at a final performance on Sunday June 10th 2012. Please note: There will be no class on Wednesday May 2nd.

Beowulf: Mondays and Thursdays
When the Anglo-Saxons from the lands along the North Sea migrated onto Britain's shores in the early fifth and sixth centuries, they brought heroic tales about their ancestors with them. These stories, told in verse and handed down orally by poets, helped preserve the history of a people. One of the first stories to be written down, and one of the oldest poems in Old English, tells about the warrior Beowulf, who saves the people of Denmark from a hideous monster named Grendel, who has been terrorizing the kingdom. We will use the story of Beowulf as a jumping off point, as well as the story of Grendel by John Gardner. Gardner’s twist on the tale is his choice to narrate the story from the monster’s point of view, transforming a snarling, terrible beast into a lonely but intelligent outsider who bears a striking resemblance to his human adversaries. We will also look at the use of poetry and verse in theatre. Our findings will result in a compelling commentary on war, heroism and the exploration of right vs. wrong.

Ages 14 & Up

Please contact Samantha if you would like details on becoming an intern for our upcoming production of the Far Away by Caryl Churchill, opening in September 2012.

All Ages: Private Lessons

I am now offering private lessons (drama coaching) on Saturdays and some evenings. Each lesson runs half an hour and will be scheduled once weekly. In class we will select and work on two contrasting monologues (solo speeches from plays or books). Monologues offer an avenue for character study, confidence building and help students polish their stage craft. A good monologue will arm the student with material for auditions, should they wish to try out for plays at different theater companies.
Students can come on an ongoing basis or decide to do a series of lessons, in which case, 5-6 lessons are suggested for working on and memorizing two monologues.

Please Call or email Samantha to schedule a time at (971) 207-9081
Cost: $20 per lesson
